All for the Cause
About the Exhibition:
In 1989, the Southern Poverty Law Center in Atlanta, GA, premiered its Civil Rights Memorial acknowledging the martyrs of the civil rights struggle. This memorial, designed by artist Maya Linn, was inspired by the words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “ I have a dream speech….. until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” At the memorial a steady stream of water washes over the inscribed names of 40 people who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. The All for the Cause exhibition was inspired by the magazine publication that accompanied the Civil Rights Memorial titled “Free At Last, a history of the civil rights movement and those who died in the struggle”. This magazine showcased portraits and short essays on each of the individuals named on the memorial and who died between the landmark 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education and Dr. King’s slaying in 1968. After viewing this publication artist Larry Winston Collins was inspired to create the All for the Cause series. Collins’ desire is to spread the stories behind these individuals to a wider audience. Each portrait is unique, created using mixed materials, including plaster, paint, wood and metals.
